The Definition of Soil:—It is the un-consolidated but slightly coheringmass of rock fragments and secondarychemical products derived therefrom,mixed witn varying amounts of organicremains; containing some water andair, and usually minute forms of plantlife; has a considerable degree of heat,and forms the surface of the earthand in which plants will ordinarilygrow. Hilgard gives this definition as fol-lows:—A soil is the more or lessloose and friable material in which, bymeans of their roots, plants may finda foot hold and nourishment, as wellas other conditions of growth. In itsagricultural sense, the word soil is usedto describe this thin layer of surfaceearth, that like some great blanket, istucked around our globe. The denserand more compact material under thisis called the subsoil. The soil variesin different localities from a few inch-es to many feet.
