All at onceits top seemed to move, and to his astonish-ment he saw that it was another bear, grubbingup roots. The dogs saw the bear as soon aslie, and, with barks and yelps, started for it atfull speed. Jud followed, expecting to see thebear take to a tree, as a black bear alwaysdoes when closely pressed by dogs. This bear,however, neither fought, ran. nor climbed, butmoved off with a shambling, effortless gait.Jud was armed with nothing bigger than ajack-knife, but, snatching up a stick, he rushedshouting toward the bear, while the dogsbarked as they ran.
