William Champ was granted his license in July 1871, by which time there were three or four other hotels in the Beenleigh area, including the Planter's Rest which became a venue for balls and public meetings. The Carpenter's Arms catered to a different kind of customer, like the wild lads from the Albert and Coomera districts who rode down to the city to drink and to gamble at the annual Queen's Birthday Races.
