The orthodox or evangelical doctrineis, that God is indeed always willing to for-give, needing no entreaties to be persuaded,and possessing no vindictiveness to be ap-peased ; but that a substitute for the pun-ishment threatened is absolutely essentialto make such a pardon possible; that sucha substitute has been provided by the lifeand death of Christ, and that forgiveness isfreely offered for his sake.1 The duty of forgiveness of our enemies isinculcated in many passages, not only byChrist and the apostles, but also as far backas the Mosaic law.
