Pony and bowl barrow on Hilltop Heath, New Forest Looking towards the north side of one of the bronze-age bowl barrows on this flat part of Beaulieu Hilltop Heath. The pony grazing in the foreground is one of the many commoners' stock that graze the open New Forest heathland. It is wearing a reflective collar which is supposed to make it more visible on the unfenced roads that cross the heathland. The New Forest heaths, such as this, have for many hundreds of years been considered 'wastes' since the thin acid soil was not much use for agriculture. The barrows on the heaths are undamaged by ploughing, although some have been disturbed by antiquarian digging and military activity during the Second World War.
