Pony grazing near the edge of Islands Thorns Inclosure, New Forest This inclosure was first enclosed in 1852 and planted mainly with oak and beech. This edge of the inclosure is planted with Scots pine. After the trees in an inclosure have established, the inclosure is 'thrown open' i.e. it has its fences removed so that it can be grazed by commoners' stock. Island Thorns is quite an open wood and there is enough grass growing on the woodland floor to keep this pony interested.
