"Dogs are most valuable in winter, as they are then attached to sleds and will draw 100 pounds twenty miles or more a day, five or six being usually harnessed to each sled. Dog teams were found of great service by the many parties who came out from Dawson during the past winter, and but for them many would not have been able to make the trip. The native dogs of the interior are the most valuable and have sold as high as $200 each in Dawson. Car loads of mongrel curs have been shipped into Seattle and other points of departure for Alaska, and then trained to work in teams, making both day and night hideous with their howlings."
