Farmyard cat and pineapple weed A territorial cat adopts a defensive position at the sight of the photographer's dog. Around it can be see the characteristic unpetalled flowers of Matricaria discoidea, a very common plant of bare, trampled places such as yards and gateways. Pineapple weed was introduced into the UK just prior to 1900 and within 25 years it had spread along roadsides throughout much of the country. The name comes from the scent when crushed. It's also known as rayless chamomile or stinking mayweed and was once used as a vermifuge. Its loss of petals is an adaptation to its robust environmental niche.
